Nicosia Tavernes - Zanettos

Η ταβέρνα λειτουργεί στη οδό Τρικούπη 65 από το 1938. Ο Σάββας Ζανέττος από τη Λακατάμια ο οποίος γεννήθηκε στις 24 Ιουλίου 1882 επιστρέφοντας από την Αμερική οπού ήταν μετανάστης άνοιξε μια μπακαλοταβέρνα στη οδό Τρικούπη 65 στη εντός των τειχών πόλη με τη ονομασία ‘Ταβέρνα Ζανέττος’. Πωλούσε είδη παντοπωλείου (παστά κρέατα και ψαριά, κονσέρβες, οινοπνευματώδη ποτά, όσπρια κτλ). Στον ίδιο χώρο σέρβιρε και ποτό (κονιάκ και κρασί) αλλά και τους μεζέδες του. Λίγα τραπεζάκια στα πρώτα χρονιά της λειτουργίας του και ‘πάγκο’…το γνωστό σε μας με τη μορφή συγχρόνου μπαρ, όπου στέκονταν οι μοναχικοί πελάτες ή φίλοι για να πιούν ένα ‘κονιάκκι με κανέναν μεζέ’. Από αναφορές από παλιούς πελάτες του ο γέρος ο Ζανέττος τηγάνιζε τη μαρίδα μπροστά τους. Ο καφετζής της γειτονιάς, ο αείμνηστος Γιώργος Ιωαννίδης (γνωστός στη παλιά Λευκωσία ως ‘Ο ΜΑΓΚΑΣ’) ανέφερνε συχνά σαν του καλυτέρους μεζέδες του γέρου Ζανέττου το χταποδάκι το καθιστό αλλά και τα αφέλεια και τους καραόλους γιαχνί. Ο Μάγκας θυμόταν ακόμα το γέρο Ζανέττο να παρασκευάζει στο χαρτζί (μεγάλη κατσαρόλα) κονιάκκι το οποίο εμφιάλωνε με το όνομα Ζανέττο και φυσικά σέρβιρε και τους θαμώνες της ταβέρνας

The quintessential Cypriot taverna, set in the middle of old Engomi (a Nicosia suburb) with tables spilling out on the street offering a strong meze.A popular venue for locals and visitors, in a village setting, where, in the summer months the tables are placed on a roundabout surrounded by rustic houses. No menus – just a series of about 35 plates with different meze dishes. You may find yourself seated at a table next to a village family or visiting ambassadors. Plaka Tavern is a restaurant, serving traditional Cypriot food. When I went, I was with a group of six and we ordered meze. A plate of meze is 20 euro per person. It was completely worth it as the food was unique and very flavorful. I enjoyed the meze at Plaka Tavern because I got a variety of renowned traditional food, that tasted very good. This included, chicken, lamb, beef,salads, pasta, etc. , you are paying for multiple dishes, coming in large portions. Meze comes out in at least four courses and by the end I was stuffed. Plaka tavern offered a variety of fruit and a pastry for desert. The fruit was fresh but I did not like the pastry. While the breading was good, it was filled with a cheese that was not for me. Even so, i would still get the fuit platter because of the variety of fruit. It was a good touch to the end of the meal. I strongly recommend Plaka Tavern. The food has strong tastes and the staff is very friendly. They were helpful to our requests and the food came quickly. Also, Plaka Tavern has outdoor seating, which creates a pleasant atmosphere. Overall, my meal at Plaka Tavern was an excellent experience

SEPTEMBERFEST - Nicosia Beer Fun Festival

The first Beer Festival in Lefkosia, aptly dubbed ‘Septemberfest’, kicks off tomorrow in what Nicosia Municipality hopes will be an annual event to boost tourism in the capital.

The festival is only one of the municipality’s many initiatives to help Lefkosia to secure the 2017 European Capital of Culture.

Customers will have the opportunity to choose from up to 49 different brands. Cyprus will be represented by its three local producing companies: KEO, Carlsberg and Leon.

The festival includes a rich variety of beers, food stalls and various music performances.

The Septemberfest starts Tuesday September 18, at 19:00 and wil runs until September 23and takes place in the moat of the city walls at the Costanza Bastion.

Καλή επιλογή είναι τα άγρια μανιτάρια τσιγαρισμένα με κρεμμύδι, τα τραγανά ρολά σε κρούστα φύλλου με έντονη γεύση τυριού και φυσικά τα αρνίσια παιδάκια. Babylon Bar Nicosia

Hidden in a side road off one of Nicosia’s busiest streets is Babylon, which hit the scene in 1993, and is now a popular den for Nicosia’s chilled crowds, attracting a wide age group (resting mostly on a mid-twenties clientele) with its laid-back atmosphere.

It’s one of those longstanding forts that you welcome in waves of enthusiasm mostly around early September every year when the breweries go on a gift-giving frenzy. With their troops of two meter Scandinavian goddesses in 9inch heels, armed with caps and t-shirts and bottle-openers, they invade and Babylon’s garden becomes a battleground of beer-promotion not to be missed. The patio, veiled by the overgrowth, is open throughout the summer and although it can get pretty crowded, the dim lights preserve a dome of privacy around each table. The garden also proves a popular setting for football aficionados as games are often broadcast on the big screens in the cool outdoors.

During winter, customers retreat to the cozy indoors where its mystique décor of candle doused bottles, reddish glow and walls covered in musical memorabilia - like posters boasting two pound entrance fee to see The Doors - make you nostalgic for times you never knew. At the same time, the familiar classical rock tunes of your teenage days (maybe it’s time to change the CD), inspire hearty cheers to happy years. And when the night calls for a challenge, the pool-table’s always a fun place to start a ludicrous bet.

The bar offers a wide range of beers, cocktails and other drinks, as well as modest range of tasty meals including burgers, fajitas and salads (nothing over a tener). Be warned: those who attempt to skip the calories will fail miserably as the compulsive nibbling of pop-corn which never seems to run out is impossible to contain.

All in all, it’s the kind of place you keep coming back to. If you’re a Babylon kind of person you probably already know it, and if you don’t, now’s the time to find out!

Camel Park - Places for Kods

The Camel Park at Mazotos is conveniently located only 15 minutes from Larnaca Airport and centrally located between Larnaca, Limassol & Nicosia.  Established in 1998, it is run by a family whose love for the countryside and animals made it possible for them to create a unique park.  In the past, camels were used for transportation on the island but today they can only be found at the Camel Park.  Visitors will find plenty of places to take photographs and a souvenir shop that offers mementos of their trip.

  The Camel Park can also be used for barbecues, school excursions and birthday parties.  The restaurant can provide catering for up tp 400 people.

Και έτσι, τα μικρά σκανδαλιάρικα καλικατζαράκια, με πολύ μεράκι και χαρά, δημιούργησαν ένα όμορφο, ιδιαίτερο και πλήρως ανακαινισμένο παιχνιδότοπο με σκοπό να καλύψει τις ανάγκες, τόσο των γονιών όσο και των παιδιών για ώρες χαλάρωσης και ατελείωτου παιχνιδιού. Επειδή όμως τα καλικατζαράκια είναι πολύ ιδιαίτερα πλασματάκια, έφτιαξαν έτσι το χώρο τους, ο οποίος πληρεί όλες τις προδιαγραφές ασφαλείας ΕΛΟΤ, για να μπορούν να απολαμβάνουν οι γονείς το καφεδάκι τους, όσο αυτά παίζουν αμέριμνα! SOUVLAKI BAR NICOSIA

Η τάση για value-for-money εστιατόρια στη Λευκωσία συνεχίζεται. Το Σουβλάκι Bar ξεφύτρωσε στην πρωτεύουσα χωρίς να το πάρει κανένας είδηση και έφερε μαζί του πολύ ελληνικές γεύσεις και όχι μόνο. Βρίσκεται στην καρδιά της Θεμιστοκλή Δέρβη, είναι μεγάλο και ταυτόχρονα αισθητικά προσεγμένο.

Ο χώρος είναι όμορφος, ντιζαϊνάτος και λιτός με έναν ανάλαφρο μοντέρνο τρόπο. Οι χρωματισμοί είναι κοντά στο λευκό και το μπεζ. Στον κλιματιζόμενο μέσα χώρο γίναμε θεατές των μαγείρων και των βοηθών που πηγαινοέρχονταν γεμάτοι δράση στην κουζίνα τους, η οποία είναι ανοικτή και σχεδόν ένα με τη σάλα, με μόνο έναν πάγκο να τις χωρίζει. Έξω, σε έναν στεγασμένο χώρο, κάθονταν οι καπνιστές και οι φανατικοί οπαδοί της φυσικής ατμόσφαιρας, βρέξει-χιονίσει. Και εκεί τα πράγματα ήταν προσεγμένα και όμορφα. Μια σειρά από αλουμινένιες γλαστρούλες που φιλοξενούσαν δυόσμο, βασιλικό και λεβάντα γέμιζαν το περιβάλλον τόσο με το χρώμα όσο και με τα αρώματά τους.

Ζητήσαμε λουκάνικο κυπριακό (€2.45), τζατζίκι (€1.90) και ταχίνι (€1.90) για αρχή. Το λουκάνικο ήταν ό,τι καλύτερο δοκίμασα στο είδος εδώ και χρόνια. Με κρέας χοντροκομμένο, καλά μαριναρισμένο στο κρασί του και αρωματισμένο στην εντέλεια, ήρθε ζουμερό από μέσα και τραγανό στο έξω του. Μαζί με το δροσερό τζατζίκι και το ομολογουμένως αλμυρό ταχίνι έφτασαν στο τραπέζι ελληνικές πίτες ραντισμένες με ελαιόλαδο, ρίγανη και χοντρό αλάτι. Συνεχίσαμε με μια κυπριακή πίτα με σουβλάκι και σεφταλιά (€6), με τη σεφταλιά να είναι καλύτερη από το σουβλάκι, αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι θα την ήθελα πιο αυθάδικη γευστικά, πιο τολμηρή στα αρώματά της και λιγότερη στεγνή.

Η πολυπόθητη γευστική ισορροπία ήρθε μαζί με τον χοιρινό γύρο σε ελληνική πίτα (€3.50). Εκεί πιστεύω ότι ο σεφ κέντησε κι εμείς δοκιμάσαμε τον καλύτερο γύρο στα προσωπικά μας ιστορικά: Ήταν τραγανός και απίστευτα ψιλοκομμένος, αρωματισμένος και σιγοψημένος. Δεν φαινόταν λιπαρός, μου φαινόταν ζουμερός και ταυτόχρονα ένιωθα ότι γευόμουν μόνο ψαχνό. Γευστικά πάντως ήταν όνειρο. Μια άλλη ελληνική πίτα (€3.50) με κοτόπουλο σουβλάκι είχε ανάλαφρη και ευχάριστη γεύση. 

Το μενού προσφέρει στους θαμώνες επιλογές για να πάρουν το κρέας τους σε ελληνική πίτα, πίτα κυπριακή ή σε μερίδα στο πιάτο. Π.χ. το σουβλάκι-σεφταλιά είναι €8.50 σε μερίδα, €6 σε κυπριακή πίτα και €3.80 σε ελληνική. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι από το όμορφο Σουβλάκι Bar δεν θα φύγετε ούτε νηστικοί ούτε πολυέξοδοι. 

Η εξυπηρέτηση στο Σουβλάκι Bar ήταν άνετη και άμεση, ενώ στο τέλος μας κέρασαν και ένα ωραίο μαχαλεπί, ό,τι καλύτερο για τις ζεστές μέρες του καλοκαιριού, τόσο μα τόσο μακριά από το βουνό ή τη θάλασσα.
Το Σουβλάκι Bar το χαρήκαμε. Έχει την αίσθηση του νέου παλιού, με το πολύ παραδοσιακό σουβλάκι να έχει την τιμητική του, σε μια σύγχρονη όμως ατμόσφαιρα και τις χαμηλές τιμές που απαιτεί η εποχή. Δοκιμάστε το!
